CATCH A CLASSIC

Max Steiner TCM, Beginning at 6 p.m.

Some of the outstanding film music by the legendary Max Steiner, who composed more than 300 scores during Hollywood’s golden age, can be heard in tonight’s lineup of features on Turner Classic Movies. The evening begins with the TCM premiere of the two-hour 2021 documentary Max Steiner: Maestro of Movie Music, which examines the composer’s life and how he eventually found his way to Hollywood, creating a vital new art form once movies found their voice. Sandwiched between this premiere and an encore broadcast of the documentary is Casablanca (1942), the iconic romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid and Claude Rains and whose reputation as one of the greatest movies ever made has Steiner’s famous, Oscar-nominated score as one of the big contributors as to why. Then, after the re-airing of the documentary, the night concludes with Now, Voyager (1942), the melodrama led by Bette Davis and Paul Henreid featuring an Oscar-winning score by Steiner, and 1933’s King Kong (pictured), whose thrilling music is a terrific highlight from Steiner’s earlier days composing for RKO Radio Pictures.
