91 YEARS AGO IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS

Editor’s note: Every day, The Denver Gazette reprints some of the best front pages of the Rocky Mountain News as pulled from its 100-plus-year archives.

The census results are back and Denver’s official population is 287,644 but the Chamber of Commerce has a plan to improve that. In the cartoon, and the story below, the chamber pushes for the city’s four suburbs — Arvada, Aurora, Englewood and Wheat Ridge — to join in Greater Denver for census purposes. The four suburbs have 38,302 people and would boost the total to around 325,000. In the cartoon, the four suburbs look like they might go for it.

Note that Lakewood, Thornton and some other suburbs don’t exist yet. Also note that yesterday’s temperature hit 94 — a record high and the hottest day of the year so far. So the population numbers aren’t the only thing lower back then.
